Te Haerenga o mata whanui: Update one
update: two
Te haerenga o mata whānui is a 2nd level Te haerenga programme for those who have done Te haerenga and wishes to go further. Te Haerenga o mata whānui is about broadening your horizons and going deeper in our understanding of who God is.
This past weekend marked the first of 4 gatherings, once a month for the rest of this year.
It was an awesome time being together again which was a highlight for many.
About 22 of us adults gathered at Waipapa marae in Kawhia. (Recently Waipapa was on marae DIY which aired on maori tv)
Our main focus for the weekend was 'te reo me ona tīkanga' (Maori language and customs)
Questions:
'what is culture'?
'what is world view'?
'who creates culture'?
'what parts, if any, of maori culture is relevant today now that we are Christians'?
'what are the evil things in maori culture'?
'is it possible to create culture without language'?
These were some of the questions we discussed on Saturday morning. It was a very rich time of sharing, asking questions and receiving revelation.
Saturday afternoon we split off as men and women to talk about the role of both men and women in the context of the pōwhiri (welcome ceremony) that being the whaikōrero (speeches) for the men and the kāranga (the call of welcome & responding) for the women.
The rest of the time we had interactive reo lessons in groups of different levels which was a whole lot of fun and creating actions to song based on Moses and his journey to and on Mount Sinai.
The weekends aim was simply to be met where we are at and take a step forward from there.
Our next weekend gathering is in Putaruru on Ruapeka Marae 5-7 Oct. This is the first time being there so we are looking forward in breaking new ground.
The focus for that weekend is 'hearing the voice of God'
(thanks to Waipapa marae for hosting us, Pare Hiwa and Pareoranga for teaching and to all the Te haerenga whanau)
